This is to me by far the most interesting aspect of the course. Labor demand is derived from the firms desire to maximize profits. This is a basic assumption of labor demand. Will the firms continually try to make changes that will improve the profitability of the firm? We assume that yes they will. Firms are basically price takers. Now their main decision is what quantity of their product to produce. This is because as they hire more people they basically increase output so the decision hire more people and the decision to produce more are basically the same decision. The optimal output will equate marginal revenue with marginal cost. Marginal revenue is the product price in a purely competitive market. Marginal cost is therefore the cost to produce that unit. MPl is the change in output of the firm. What happens when a firm decides to produce more? They must hire more labor assuming that capital remains constant. If a firm could continuously hire more peole and increase their MRP then we would live in a utopian society with no unemployment and peace and happiness everywhere. But alas we live in a world with diminishing returns and as the firm highers more people it reaches a pont where each new person costs a little more when compared with their output then the person hired before them. A good example of this is digging a hole 4 feet by 8feet by 6feet . One person would do it in about half the time that two people could do it. But three people would not do it in one third of the time. This loss in efficiency is what I am talking about. In fact soon you couldn't fit all of he people into the hole and it would be so cramped that it would atually take longer to finish the hole. If this happened then they would have a negative marginal product of labor. So the firm should keep hiring people until its marginal revenue product exceeds its marginal expense. But can they get people to come to their camp? Some time scarcity in the labor force pushes the wage ratre up and this increases the marginal expense this will shift the employment level and reduce the amount that the firm is willing to hire unless at the same time marginal revenue product goes up. This will have the opposite effect and keep employment up. But under most circumstances one of these moves more than the other and a new equilibrium is found. What this can really be used for in my personal life is the determination of wages. Before this class I had no idea how I would decide how may people to hire. Now I know that if I hire two people for 10 dollars per hour then they had better be adding at least x*$10 per hour to my company. Why I Love Business Essay The idea to pursue a career in business first infiltrated my mind when I was just twelve years old. My uncle, a successful businessman running a pharmaceutical company, ignited my interest. He has been the most influential person in my life, and to this day I believe that without him, I probably would have no attraction to the business environment. My uncleââ¬â¢s legendary story about starting a business from, ââ¬Å"the bottom up,â⬠fascinated. After graduating college, my uncle went to Hainan, a fast-developing city on the coast of China. He had no money, immediately found work in construction, but being unskilled labor the low pay barely helped. However, true to character, he never complained. During this time, my uncle prepared himself for any opportunities to better himself. After three years of hard work, my uncle invested all the money he saved into the real estate industry. Sweet success! He struggled from a humble student to a flourishing businessman. My uncle dedicated his life to the world of business, his fortitude and wisdom attributed to his success. Although I spent little time with my uncle when I was young, I enjoyed every occasion to talk and listen to him. I still remember once, during a family gathering, he talked about the concept of running a business, ââ¬Å"The purpose of running the company is not only for personal benefit. A successful businessman always creates great social value while accumulating wealth. What he should do is not only understand and apply the rules and regulations; he should also spread the skills and concepts of running a business to others which may create uncountable benefits. To me at the age of eleven, money seemed to be the only reason my uncle labored day and night. Although I couldnââ¬â¢t understand the full meaning of his statement, at the time, I knew it was clever judging from the reactions of other family members. At the age of fifteen, I began my fervent interest in reading which increased my understanding of the business world, through the books I read. B like, John Gordonââ¬â¢s The Great Game: a History of Wall Street was my favorite. Mr. Gordonââ¬â¢s primary objective revolved around his stories of the great plungers and scandals that were usually considered the most popular histories of Wall Street. The book brings to life many intriguing personalities of business giants, like Boesky, Hamilton, Kennedy, Morgan and Vanderbilt. What appealed to me most was that the book arranged centuries of economic activity into a succinct, yet informative novel; embodying Wall Street not as an entity of finance but rather a thriving, complicated character. I was attracted to the beautiful and animated lifestyles of those people and imagined that my life in the future would be like theirs, full of excitement. The business world is not all as rosy as I imagined. Like any industry, itââ¬â¢s a roller coaster ride. The book shows the flip side with two specific examples of severe crisis. They involved scrupulous men, Jacob Little and Daniel Drew. Both because of poor judgment and possible greed went bankrupt overnight Little and Drew had different styles, but perfectly fit the all American dream, the rags to riches story. Starting with no money, struggling up the ladder, one investment at a time, to their ultimate success. One of them filed bankruptcy four times; the other is infamous for his foxy tracks and trips. Where ever the truth likes, Jacob Little and Daniel Drew will have their names remembered along side their exaggerated successful stories, with their loses forgotten. The dark side of the business world, peeked my curiosity even more, I wanted to explore its side and learn from it. The desire to immerse myself in the business world also came from my inner voice, attempting to break away from normal life. Growing up as the only child in the family, encouraged my parents to be over protective, and to indulge me excessively. They planned everything for me; and expected me to behave in the way they wanted; decided what was good for me and what was bad. For instance, I didnââ¬â¢t like to draw, although I do appreciate the splendor of paintings, but because of my motherââ¬â¢s longing, I had to take drawing for four years. Before I learned to dispute against the so-called parental authority, I followed their rules and was a submissive girl who obeyed their every wish. My uncleââ¬â¢s experiences led me to think business was my weapon; I could gain control of my life, through successâ⬠¦ Bluntly speaking, I thrived at the idea that money would make me independent from my family. At sixteen, I anticipated what it would be like to lead my own life; the business world was a very appealing option. Greed is one of the deadliest sins for a valid reason. Some people with too much money fall into the greed pit. Itââ¬â¢s like a game that people can never win. My personal experience proved how misguided wealth and precarious greed could end in corruption. One of my cousins, twelve years older than me, grew up in a small village. He was a notable doctor, invaluable to the village, before money tarnished his life. Ironically, his hard work, brought him fame and respect, along with more money and and greed slowly infected him. My cousin wasnââ¬â¢t satisfied with his newfound wealth and turned to gambling, a vice he never thought about when he was simply earning a living as a modest doctor. Gambling, like greed, is a game you canââ¬â¢t win and my cousin lost, and lost big. To accommodate his loses he started over charging his patients to. Eventually, his patients accused him and was sent to jail for two years. This distressing story taught me a life lesson of the corruption brought out by money. The more I learned about marketing, the more I wanted to venture into this side of business. Last semester I joined Michigan Advertising and Marketing, a student organization that provides strategic marketing services for local businesses. My team worked on a market research project to measure the advertising effectiveness among University students. The experience allowed me to enhance my practical skills in market research, learning how to write proposals, create surveys, and collect data. One challenge I discovered was the need to immediately apply our findings to the questions at hand. I learned that while deep analysis is important to marketing, correct and timely application is imperative and critical to the success of a campaign. Iââ¬â¢ve also enjoyed the process of understanding the customersââ¬â¢ needs and desires, then translating those needs into a marketing strategy. I respect the concept that marketing is to create, manage and enhance products. All these experiences assist me on my journey into the world of business. I see the journey with amazing and remarkable foresight. Iââ¬â¢m walking along the road to success, I can see portions of my path, making me more excited to continue. With the future unknown, one thing for sure, I will have an unforgettable experience.

A Comparison of Wilfred Owenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum estâ⬠to Alfred Tennysonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Charge of the Light Brigadeâ⬠In this essay I will attempt to compare and contrast Wilfred Owenââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum estâ⬠to Alfred Tennysonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Charge of the Light Brigadeâ⬠. I will examine the use of poetic devices in the poems as well as outline what is happening in each. Wilfred Owen was born on the 18th of March 1893 in owestry, United Kingdom. He was the oldest of four children and was educated in an evangelical school. Though Owen rejected most of his beliefs by 1913 the influence of his education still remains evident in his poems and their themes of sacrifice, biblical language and his vivid, frightening description of hell. One of the main influences on Owenââ¬â¢s poetry was his meeting with Siegfried Sassoon, though Owen soon fashioned his own style and approach to the war. The characteristics of Owenââ¬â¢s poetry are the use of Para rhyme (The rhyming of two words which have the same consonants but whose stressed vowels are different), alliteration, and assonance. Alfred Tennyson was born on 5th August 1809 in Somersby, Lincolnshire and died on the 6th October 1892 to later be buried in the poetââ¬â¢s corner in Westminster Abby. Tennyson was often regarded as the chief representative of the Victorian age in poetry, succeeding Wordsworth as poet laureate in 1850. Wilfred Owenââ¬â¢s poems are inspired by the horrors of his own experiences in World War One from 28th July 1914 to 4th November 1918, the day that he died 1 week before the armistice. At the time of this poem there were excessive amounts of propagandistic poetry for example Jessie Popeââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Whoââ¬â¢s for the game?â⬠Lord Alfred Tennysonââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"Charge of the Light Brigadeâ⬠was written to commemorate the suicidal charge by British light cavalry over open terrain in the Battle of Balaclava (Ukraine) in the Crimean War from 1854 to 1856. This was the first war to have photographic media coverage. Of the 637 men involved in the charge, 247 were killed or injured. Tennyson describes the valiant charge of the light brigade into ââ¬Å"the jaws of deathâ⬠. Tennyson makes use of repetition, allusion, and personification to paint a vivid picture of the charge and at the same time give the reader an insight into the mind of the brave soldiers of the light brigade. The rhythm of this poem imitates the sound of the horses galloping towards th... ...nly minor injuries can me sustained from war for example a broken leg. I preferred ââ¬Å"Charge of the light brigadeâ⬠because the pace and rhyming scheme give a sense of action and excitement. Strong metaphors and similes are used to provide the reader with an insight into the minds of the soldiers. I especially like how Tennyson describes the conflict itself in the 4th stanza, as this is a strong example of the sense of action in his work. The perception of war has gone through much change since the time of Tennyson, in Tennysonââ¬â¢s time war was regarded as a good thing but over time the perception of war has completely reversed, and in my opinion it seems these days that war is something that should be avoided at all costs mainly due to the technical advances made giving war much more potential to destroy more than just lives. I will conclude this essay with a quote from ââ¬Å"the charge of the light brigadeâ⬠which I believe shows the heroism of those men who died for their country and persevered under impossible odds. ââ¬Å"When can their glory fade? Effective Speech Susan B. Anthony Speech 1873 Susan B. Anthony was born on February 15, 1820 and she was one of the many women in the nineteenth century to fight for womenââ¬â¢s rights. She would travel all over the nation and create petitions for the right for women to vote and also slavery. She was an abolitionist, an educational reformer, a labor activist, and of course a womenââ¬â¢s right campaigner. As brave as she was, she voted illegally in the presidential election of 1872 in Rochester, New York and arrested.They had fined her 100 dollars but did not imprison her, which she refused to pay. The next year, Susan presented a speech explaining and demanding that women had the right vote just as much as men did. She states, ââ¬Å"It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. (1873)â⬠. She pointed out that the constitution itself stated that people as a whole would help and contribu te to justice and establishment in the United States.Most importantly, Susan Anthonyââ¬â¢s speech in 1873 was effective in every way. Although, it took as long as 14 years after her speech for women to have the lawful right to vote and exactly one hundred years after her birth, she campaigned and petitioned all over the nation and was part of several organizations against slavery, womenââ¬â¢s suffrage and the labor movement. She fought and petitioned for the thirteenth amendment which was to outlaw slavery. She was threatened by many people and humiliated but nothing stopped Susan from continuing to fight for everyoneââ¬â¢s rights.I define effective as being helpful and successful, in Susanââ¬â¢s case, it wasnââ¬â¢t successful right away, but her intelligence throughout all the years after her arrest, made her stronger and thatââ¬â¢s what made her goal become a success, she never gave up. The speech took place in 1872 in Rochester, New York after she voted for the presidential election. It was after the judge had fined her with $100 to pay for unlawfully voting for a candidate. The court room was filled with politics, former presidents, women and men that supported her words.She stood alone at the Canandaigua Courthouse and gave her speech before her sentencing. She stood handcuffed but nothing stopped Susan B. Anthony from expressing her feelings towards the authorities that were trying to keep her from voting. Susan opened her speech by addressing it to each and every single person in the room. She did not mention only men or only women but stated, ââ¬Å"Friends and fellow citizensâ⬠. Her main ideas that she was mainly focused on getting across were the constitution itself explained how we the people were to help establish a better and equal America.She did not understand why the constitution contradicted itself because later, women were still not allowed to vote. She also explained, if the government wouldnââ¬â¢t allow women to vo te, they were degrading us. ââ¬Å"For any state to make sex a qualification that must ever result in the disfranchisement of one entire half of the people, is to pass a bill of attainder, or, an ex post facto law, and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land. By it the blessings of liberty are forever withheld from women and their female posterityâ⬠(Susan B.Anthony 1873). In this quote she strongly expresses her feelings and beliefs, if the government were to ever pass that law, liberty and equality were to be taken from women forever. Women all over the nation supported her and felt the same exact way. She used effective language and everyone understood where she was coming from. Susan was very motivating and persuading, not only in her speech but many of the other speeches she had presented in the past in court rooms, events in town during the womanââ¬â¢s suffrage movement.She created petitions all over the nation to get people to support her so she would have many reasons and supporters when the time would come. The speech wasnââ¬â¢t so conversational but more of a last words speech before she was sentenced. She had many goals she wanted to achieve but her main concern was to be able to have the same rights as men had. Men at the time had the right to vote, and were eligible to run as a candidate in a presidential election. They treated women as animals that were not capable of managing anything and had no say in who would be the best choice for America.Many people were emotionally affected by Susanââ¬â¢s speech because she wasnââ¬â¢t only fighting for herself but for other women and also slaves. She did not only think about herself but others too. People realized that she casted this vote for women and slaves so that the government would know that Susan was no longer taking any disrespect from her fellow citizens. Iââ¬â¢m not sure if she was well prepared because when she had given her speech she was in court. She proba bly felt a lot of pressure because this speech determined if they would really listen to her or sentence her to a long time in jail or bombard her with fines from he government. The text from the speech is well said and well thought out, every word came out one hundred percent strong and she spoke with powerful words. If you pay attention on how she stands up for women and the slaves at the time, she was very serious and completely heartbroken because of the decisions and laws that the government had created at the time. ââ¬Å"To them this government is not a democracy. It is not a republic. It is an odious aristocracy; a hateful oligarchy of sex; the most hateful aristocracy ever established on the face of the globe; an oligarchy of wealth, where the rich govern the poor.An oligarchy of learning, where the educated govern the ignorant, or even an oligarchy of race, where the Saxon rules the African, might be endured; but this oligarchy of sex, which makes father, brothers, husband , sons, the oligarchs over the mother and sisters, the wife and daughters, of every household ââ¬â which ordains all men sovereigns, all women subjects, carries dissension, discord, and rebellion into every home of the nationâ⬠(Susan B . Not everyone had the same opportunities as other so why not give them the opportunity to learn and share that knowledge. She also didnââ¬â¢t understand why the head of household was always addressed as the father, or if the father died the son would take his place for example in a royal chain, if the king dies, the son automatically became king. The rich were always the superior because they had the money. I support Susan B.Anthony completely because even though, it took many years for the law to become effectiv e, she did everything possible to help out women and slaves. She risked her life in some situations, was arrested for illegally voting knowing she couldnââ¬â¢t vote but did anyways for the sake of women. She has motivated me to want to be superior in a large company one day. The CEO of many companies are always men and very few women. Society has painted a picture out for us that make us think automatically that the CEO of a popular firm or chain is man instead of a woman.Also, America back in 2008 had the chance to vote a woman for president, Hilary Clinton, but we did not because we felt as if she wasnââ¬â¢t capable of running a country all on her own and America wasnââ¬â¢t ready for a woman president. Others believed that if she were to have won the election, Bill Clinton wouldââ¬â¢ve helped her run this country which is a very negative comment to say. There is nothing I would have changed about her speech but what I would have changed was the timing of the law becomi ng effective. Susan was an extraordinary woman who had courage, determination, and motivated many other women after that to continue her footsteps.

Definition of Alliterative Verse Old English literature encompasses writings in Anglo-Saxon England during its conversion to Christianity in the 7th century up until the Norman Conquest in 1066. The roots of Anglo-Saxon poetry were based on Germanic tradition that was mainly in the form of alliterative verse (Greenblatt). When comparing to other forms of poetry, there are 6 key characteristics that define alliterative verse: four-beat lines, medial caesuras, enjambments, half-line alliteration, kennings and litotes. In addition to Beowulf and ââ¬Å"Caedmonââ¬â¢s Hymnâ⬠, examples will also be taken from my alliterative verse translation of the nursery rhyme ââ¬Å"Little Jack Hornerâ⬠. A kenning is a metaphoric, two-term or ââ¬Å"compound expression used in place of a name or nounâ⬠(ââ¬Å"kenningâ⬠). In Beowulf, the term ââ¬Å"whale-roadâ⬠in line 10 is a kenning for the ocean. In ââ¬Å"Caedmonââ¬â¢s Hymnâ⬠, ââ¬Å"Wonder-Fatherâ⬠also means God. In my poem, ââ¬Å"Santaââ¬â¢s big dayâ⬠is meant to be a kenning for Christmas. A litote is an ââ¬Å"understatement in which an affirmative is expressed by negating its oppositeâ⬠(ââ¬Å"litoteâ⬠).
